Dicks Dome Shelter (AT Mi: 963.3)
September 13, 2002
(Daily Mi: 15.9) Good hike today. Finally got my legs. The terrain is a notorious "rollercoaster". Nothing big (200'-1000') but 17 hills in 7 miles. Kept up 3 mph over this tedious junk. Shoulda/coulda gone to the 21 mile shelter but was very nervous re H20. Passed 2 totally dry holes today. What there is is dirt. Dirt with water in it. But dirt. Drinking dirt won't kill me, but it's not a very satisfying beverage. At any rate, there was a flowing mudpuddle here at the Dome (it is a 4-person, 3-sided geodesic dome), and I decided to stay put. Tomorrow is Saturday, and I have to be at the Linden, Va PO (7 trail miles, 1.5 road miles) by 12:00 pm to get my maildrop.
