(Daily Mi: 20.2) My first 20 mile day (and the end of PA)! Didn't think it would turn out like this when I set out this am. In fact I had only intended to go 14 miles. It was a very boney trail (this last section of PA is famous for its rocks) plus I was a little groggy from yesterday's roasting. However, I somehow just kept plugging along, and by 2 pm I had made it 14 miles on to the last shelter before town and my intended stopping place. It was quite early and a local hiker assured Piper and me that the last 6 miles into town was a cakewalk (he turns out to have been frankly demented), and when Choo Choo came in we all agreed to head on into town. What the hiker had described as largely a walk down a fire road turned out to be a boney trail over a boney ridge followed by a steep and predictably endless descent (there was about .25 mi of fire road in there) Still, I made it (and so did Piper and eventually Choo Choo). Checked in at the Presbyterian Church hostel (Our Lady of the Mountain). The hostel is in the church basement: bunks, shower and a sitting room. Nice place and great folks. There was a jazz concert on the lawn when I came in. Met the ATC Ridgerunner for this section, Gizmo at the hostel. He functions as kind of ranger/educator. He camps and lives out of his truck when working and spends his downtime here. I took a shower and had a big, cheap dinner at the Water Gap Diner.
