Brink Road Shelter (AT Mi: 1299.6)

(Daily Mi: 14.3) First truly muggy day on the trail. Temperatures probably hit 90°. The rocks were sweating. Grim shelter. Insane mosquitoes. I was first in and managed to cover everything but my back in 100% deet. In the next 1/2 hour I was bitten through the back of my shirt well over 100 times. Worse yet, when I came in I found a black mass of flies buzzing around a rock just in front of the shelter. Upon closer inspection it turned out the flies had been drawn to six dead mice laid out on the rock as a trophy by a hiker (D-Con) who had trapped/killed them the night before. Disposed of their swollen bodies, added D-Con to my enemies list. Big group in tonight: Piper, Potato Man, Choo Choo and a large group of twenty-something northbound thru-hikers (Willy, Evergreen, Snaps, Pea Nut ...). One hiker, Amtrak from Israel, is in the shelter w/ me. Everyone else has pitched their tents and zipped down against the mosquitoes. I was one of two people with Deet and -- as result -- quite popular.
