Wawayanda Shelter (AT Mi: 1344.4)
June 10, 2002
(Daily Mi: 5.4) It was a very pretty day. A little hot but not at all humid. Had an early breakfast w/ Choo Choo and the Potato Man and went to the 9 o'clock service at the church this morning. Caught a ride from a parishioner in the back of his pickup after the coffee hour (great homemade baked goods!). Had ice cream at a produce emporium near the trailhead. Met a nice hiker named Spyder. She was already at the shelter when I came in. She is heading vaguely south from Connecticut towards Georgia. Potato Man and the Porkchop stopped by on their way to the NY/NJ state line some 4-5 miles on. The Trail crosses this milestone on an open, rocky ridge and does not promise great camping, but they are determined. Piper and Choo Choo are staying here as we all figure this might be our last night together on the Trail (it will be at least a week before a can get back on, if I do). After sunset Piper retires to his tent and begins playing his Irish tin whistle. He hasn't done this "publicly" since perhaps MD, and I am very touched by his gesture.
