KILLINGTON, VT. (AT Mi: 1683.1)
July 11, 2002
(Daily Mi: 16.7) Fantastic walk today. Probably the best on the AT to date. Hammered 2000' up the backside of Killington with the Woodman. Made it 10 miles to the base by 9 a.m. and were up top before noon. We went hand over foot an extra couple of hundred feet up a side trail to the actual summit and scrambled down the far side to the cafe at the top of the ski lift for warm cocoa.

Met Mathew and Stout in the summit cafe.

Mathew joined me and the Woodman for a brisk endorphin fueled hike down into in the valley and the Inn at the Long Trail, a beloved stopping place for hikers on both the LT and AT, originally on but now a 1/4 mile off trail.

The bar serves slow poured Guiness and there is semi-legal camping in a Forest Service parking lot accross the road. I recommend pitching your tent before hitting the bar though. I did not and provided 20 minutes of great entertainment for Mathew and Stout as I pitched my tarp three Guinesses to the wind.

My cousin Marguerite, who lives nearby, came and had dinner with me at the Inn. I am so skinny, she claims my stomach has gone convex
