Bloomberg Proposes Ban on Alcohol Service in NYC Bars and Restaurants Thur, Jun 26 2003 Posted: 10:02 EST (1502 GMT) NEW YORK -- Saying that "nothing makes you want a cigarette more than a stiff drink" New York's nanny Mayor, Michael Bloomberg has proposed regulations banning the sale of alcohol in city establishments. Mayor Bloomberg indicated his belief that people would be glad to sit in sterile, well lit interiors sipping $5 juices and spring water while chatting in respectful, hushed tones.

This new initiative follows on the defeat of a related proposal that would have imposed a 3 drink minimum for passenger cars entering Manhattan. The earlier proposal was largely abandoned when it was realized that many of the logical enforcement points would in fact divert much of the revenue to New Jersery.

Responding to criticism that the move would harm city service and tourist industries, Bloomberg countered, "Hey, it's not like we're banning package stores. At least not yet. And remember we still have some of the finest strippers in the world."

In closing remarks the Mayor further suggested that he considered flavorful and exotic foods to be a growing source of menace.
